BIMSTEC The 6th Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation Summit is being held in Bangkok, Thailand, from April 2 to 4, 2025. The participating countries are Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar and Nepal.

Leadership Initiatives:
- In 2016, PM Modi hosted a Leaders’ Retreat in Goa, marking a turning point for BIMSTEC by fostering direct dialogue among leaders. This sets a proactive agenda for regional cooperation.
During his 2019 swearing-in ceremony, he invited BIMSTEC leaders, underscoring India’s commitment to the organization and strengthening diplomatic ties
Policy Frameworks:
- The Neighbourhood First and Act East policies have prioritized relationships with neighboring countries and ASEAN nations. This aligns with BIMSTEC’s objectives to enhance regional integration
Maritime and Heritage Assets in the SAGAR region emphasize maritime cooperation and cultural connectivity.
Institution and Capacity Building:
- At the 6th BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok on April 4, 2025, PM Modi announced the establishment of several India-led centers of excellence focusing on Disaster Management, Sustainable Maritime Transport, Traditional Medicine, and Research and Training in Agriculture.
He introduced the BODHI (BIMSTEC for Organized Development of Human Resource Infrastructure) program. The purpose is to provide training and scholarships for professionals, students, researchers, and diplomats within the countries.
Economic and Digital Integration:
- PM Modi proposed the creation of a BIMSTEC Chamber of Commerce and the organization of an annual BIMSTEC Business Summit. The aim is to boost trade and economic ties among member nations.
He advocated for integrating India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) with the payment systems of BIMSTEC countries to facilitate seamless digital transactions, thereby enhancing trade and tourism
BIMSTEC Connectivity Projects:
- India is actively involved in the India–Myanmar–Thailand Trilateral Highway. It is a1,360 km route ready to improve the road connectivity and fostering economic integration among the three countries
Through these concerted efforts, PM Modi has significantly contributed to making BIMSTEC a vibrant and effective platform for regional cooperation. This addresses shared challenges and promotes collective prosperity among member nations.
